What are the Slavic Languages?

The Slavic languages are languages spoken by the Slavic people (often called Slavs), the largest ethnic group in Europe. There are twelve major Slavic languages. There are the obvious ones like:

  • Russian (pусский)

  • Belarusian (Bеларуская)

  • Ukrainian (Український)

  • Bulgarian (Bългарски)

  • Macedonian (Mакедонски)

But there are also these ones:

  • Serbian (cрпски)

  • Slovak (slovenský)

  • Slovenian (slovenščina)

  • Polish (polski)

  • Czech (čeština)

  • Croatian (hrvatski)

Slavic languages do not necessarily use the Cyrillic alphabet, but can also use the Latin alphabet (showcased by the last five languages). But most of them do, the most well known language in this group being Russian. Bulgarian is considered to be the first language to use the Cyrillic writing system. The Cyrillic alphabet was loosely based off of the Greek alphabet.
