How to Read Bible-Verse Notation

Christianity is the biggest and most spread out religion in the world. Approximately 2.38 billion people practice Christianity and its variations (Catholicism, Protestantism, Lutheranism, etc.) If you've read the Christian Bible, then you know what verses are. There are over 31,000 of them. That is a lot.

But, some of you may not have read the Bible and may not know how to cite the Bible. Luckily, there is only one real way to cite the Bible.

First, would be the name of the book. We will use the book of Genesis, the first book in the Bible. You would then place the chapter number. Next, add a colon (:) then the number of the specific verse.

Example: Genesis 1:3

You would read that as "The book of Genesis, chapter 1; verse 3."

To reference multiple verses in the same book, you would do the exact same things as before but add a dash (-) and the last verse you are referencing.

Example: Genesis 1:3-8

You would read this as "The book of Genesis, chapter 1; verses 3 through 8."

You can also do citation if you are not trying to reference a continuous stream. To do this, follow the same steps as before but add commas when needed (see example)

Example: Genesis 1:1, 3, 5, 7-9

You would read this as "The book of Genesis, chapter 1; verses 1, 3, 5, and 7 through 9.
